LA's New NFL Stadium Design for Farmer's Field = AWESOME!

November 16, 2011

Architects of Farmers Field have redesigned the planned new Los Angeles NFL stadium, creating a lighter-appearing venue with a new deployable roof that will be used minimally.

"This makes it feel much more like a football stadium and it will not detract from a beautiful Sunday afternoon," said Tim Romani, chief executive of Icon Venue Group, which is overseeing the design.

The stadium differs from the original concept released earlier this year, adding a nearly clear covering that was used on the signature Bird's Nest at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Vacated, the deployable roof leaves "flight-like" wing coverings at the roof line to allow for increased openness.

"You couldn't do this in Minneapolis or Miami," Romani said, adding the deployable roof can...

AEG has talked with five @NFL teams about relocating to Los Angeles!

AEG has talked with five NFL teams about relocating to Los Angeles

The fact that the Southern California-based AEG corporation is interested in bringing an NFL team back to Los Angeles may be the worst-kept secret in America. But the company, owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz and run by president Tim Leiweke (brother of former Seattle Seahawks CEO Tod), expressed real and concrete interest in moving a team to SoCal — the first time in 16 years that the league would be located there — for a Thursday story in the Orange County Register.

"St. Louis, Jacksonville, not extensively, certainly Oakland, San Diego, Minnesota are still in the mix," Leiweke told reporter Scott M. Reed, when asked which franchises AEG had been talking to. Leiweke then added: "We're not packing any [moving] vans right now."

Leiweke then put it all on the table and said that AEG would be willing to pay to get a team out of a current stadium lease, citing the $24 million payment the Chargers would apparently have to make to get out of their current agreement.

Steeler Fans - This is Your Player - Rashard Mendenhall Twitter Comments Spark Controversy - Time For a New Running Back!

May 3, 2011

NFL star Rashard Mendenhall has found himself in hot water over comments posted to his Twitter account on Monday in the wake of Osama Bin Laden’s death.

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back tweeted, among other things: “What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…” In another tweet in response to University of Illinois basketball player Dominique Keller, Mendenhall implied a 9/11 conspiracy, writing: “I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style.”

The Steelers have moved quickly to distance themselves from Mendenhall’s comments by posting a statement to their website. President Art Rooney II writes, “I have not spoken with Rashard so it is hard to explain or even comprehend what he meant with his recent Twitter comments. The entire Steelers’ organization is very proud of the job our military personnel have done and we can...

Oakland Raiders New Stadium Name... at $1.2 Million/year for 6 Years. LA Gets a New Stadium & Name at $30 Million/year for 30 Years!

April 27, 2011

Other than the brief reign of Land Shark Stadium, the NFL has largely avoided the rash of absurdly named arenas that have plagued other sports like baseball and college basketball (I'm looking at you, KFC Yum! Center.) A new deal to rename the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum is set to change that.

The Oakland-Alameda Coliseum Authority announced a deal to rename the home stadium of the Raiders and A's as Overstock.com Coliseum. The agreement with the Internet retailer will run for six years at a cost of $7.2 million.

Overstock.com Coliseum. Overstocked tickets. Yeah, I can see the connection.

Don't get used to the name quite yet, though. Overstock is currently in the process of rebranding itself as O.co and has the right to change the name of the stadium to O.co Coliseum at any time, which will inevitably lead to fledgling "SportsCenter" anchors saying stuff like "Darren McFadden is making his O face."

The...
