Sony CEO Howard Stringer Does Not Get It! "Content Will Give Company's Tablet Edge Over Apple!"

“We will prove that it’s not who makes the tablet first...but who makes it better," he said in Berlin.

NEW YORK - Content is king, including when you compete with Apple for a share of the tablet market.

That was the message from Sony Corp. chairman and CEO Howard Stringer as he talked up his company's tablets and signaled that his company will take on Apple’s iPad by offering music and movies.

“Yes, yes, Apple makes an iPad, but does it make a movie?” Stringer said in a presentation at Berlin’s annual consumer electronics fair, Bloomberg News reported. “We will prove that it’s not who makes the tablet first...but who makes it better.”

Bloomberg quoted Alexander Peterc, an analyst at Exane BNP Paribas, as saying: “The tablet has to be significantly better than the iPad for consumers to want to buy it at that price point. Sony’s big advantage is that they have the content.”

PSN Security Breach Could Cost Sony 24 Billion Dollars!

It's been a rough week for Sony, as the company has been scrambling to detect the source and extent of the security breach recently caused by hackers. While Sony's current focus is to fix its security hole and get PSN back online, questions are now being raised about the financial cost of the leak, which could be in the billions of dollars.

The scope of the breach is potentially staggering, considering the fact that PlayStation Network has roughly 77 million user accounts. There are too many variables to put a concrete price on the mess-up, but data-security research firm, the Ponemon Institute states that the average data breach costs a company $318 per compromised user.

While simply applying that average to the total number of accounts (which would result in a $24 billion price tag) wouldn't take into consideration duplicate accounts or which users have credit card information linked to their account, Ponemon's figure is comprised from much more than a simple headcount, including...

Sony CEO Howard Stringer On the Future of Media

Howard Stringer is the president and CEO of Sony Corporation. Prior to joining Sony, Howard spent 30 years as a journalist, producer and executive at CBS. From 1988-1995, Howard served as President of CBS overseeing all of its broadcasts.

Howard worries that news media is cheapening itself and losing the public's trust. He talked to me backstage after an on-camera GPS interview about Japan in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami. Here's the transcript:

Fareed Zakaria: You were running Dan Rather’s show in the glory days when [there were] huge audiences - tens of millions of people.  What does TV news look like to you now?

Howard Stringer:  Well the fragmentation was inevitable. One could feel it coming. I left the golden age of documentaries to go into the golden days of the CBS Evening News. You could see that the audiences were eroding.

There was one event that captured it for me….I got a call that Cleveland had moved the CBS Evening News from 6:30 to 5 o'clock...
